With the return of the 2017 Purpose Driven Conference, there’s a lot of talk about what it means to be a Purpose Driven Church. Since The Purpose Driven Church sparked the Purpose Driven Church movement back in 1995, Pastor Rick Warren has not only been clear about what it means to be Purpose Driven, he’s been equally straightforward about what it doesn’t mean.

Being Purpose Driven does not require being contemporary! It has always been about being biblical and eternal. The five purposes of the church, as given to us by Jesus Christ in the Great Commandment and the Great Commission, are eternal and never go out of style. They are timeless.

Being Purpose Driven does not require a certain target group. There are literally thousands of varieties of Purpose Driven Churches: postmodern, ethnic, and language groups. There are even Purpose Driven Churches for singles, artists, and surfers. There are Purpose Driven Churches for Builders, Boomers, Millennials, and Multi-generationals—and they’re located all around the world in over 100 countries.

Being Purpose Driven does not require having a seeker-sensitive service! Purpose Driven Churches are committed to the purpose of evangelism, (one of the five New Testament purposes) not any one particular method or service. Thousands of Purpose Driven Churches DO NOT have a seeker-sensitive service; they do evangelism in many different formats.

Being Purpose Driven does not require a certain worship style. It doesn’t matter whether your worship style is liturgical, traditional, contemporary, country, charismatic, multi-sensory, or casual. What matters is that your style matches the people you are seeking to reach.

Being Purpose Driven does not require a certain size church. Purpose Driven Churches come in all shapes and sizes. The Purpose Driven strategy focuses on balance, health and strength, not on size or shape. There is no correlation between the size and strength of a church. The Purpose Driven Church model is a church-health emphasis, not a mega-church program.

Being Purpose Driven does not require a certain location. Purpose Driven Churches are found in all kinds of locations: rural, villages, small towns, suburbs, urban, and inner city areas.

Being Purpose Driven does not require a certain denomination. Purpose Driven Churches exist in over 100 different denominations and associations of churches.

The good news is, there’s not one particular formula or way of doing church—it’s the Purpose Driven focus and intention that’s important!
